Githead-BBC 6 Music Marc Riley Session 16 Dec 09

Live in session this evening we've Githead. Who are Colin Newman (of Wire), Malka Spigel and Max Franken (of Minimal Compact), and Robin Rimbaud (Scanner). Music royalty none the less!
The band started in 2004, initially to play as a one-off at the Swim record label's 10th anniversary event at the ICA.
The band's 2004 debut, the self titling EP Headgit was written, recorded and mixed in Swim's London studio.
The following year, Githead's debut album Profile brought a bigger, lusher sound, with richer songwriting, and several songs that were taken on the road during the band's first European tour.
As Githead developed as a live entity, the importance of recording live with the whole band became paramount. 2006 saw Githead move to augment Swim's small studio with Rotterdam's Metropolis 22 studio for recordings.
Employing classic 'old skool' recording techniques and songwriting craft, Art Pop was born, and released in 2007.
More European live dates followed and the band made its North American debut in Canada in June 2009.
The combination of Githead's growing power as a live band, and the development of work in Swim's studio and during trips to Rotterdam, has led naturally to its third album, Landing, released in November 2009.

Oh yes! Rock out with tonight's session guests Kurt Vile & The Violators. Jimmy from Doves recommended Kurt Vile's current album to Marc Riley while they were on a whale watching trip and Marc's never looked back. He booked them for a session practically on the spot and he's been playing Freak Train of the current album Childish Prodigy - a lot.
Kurt Vile is also guitarist with War On Drugs and is from Philadelphia. He signed to Matador Records in May 2009 as a solo artist.

Curly Hair .. not a hairstyle but tonight's band... live from Manchester! Their first single 'Blow the house down' is available on FREE download this September on Toy Soldier Records. There will be a 6 track mini album to follow.Curly Hair is Jessica and Benjamin. The two had been playing music together in Brighton's celebrated Willkommen Collective (The Leisure Society, Miserable Rich, Sons of Noel and Adrian) for a year before they took refuge from a downpour in a charity shop on a rainy December day and Jessica discovered the perfect guitar (now named Tiny) to inspire the two to write songs together. Starting out with intimate house party and gallery shows, their live act is colourful and can involve as many as 6 extra Willkommen cast members lending their skills to the sound. The pair recently expanded to a three piece, with Michael taking over percussive duties. They often indulge in cloaks, facepaint and feathers onstage, making each show a charismatic and distinctive experience.
